Americans are building AI-powered businesses and careers. Google is helping.

The tools businesses use every day — from Gmail to Search to Ads — are helping businesses increase productivity, reach the right customers, and optimize limited budgets.

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. AI can help us deliver on that mission in ways that once seemed impossible, and can benefit us all. Already, Americans are beginning to see how AI can help take on tasks that range from repetitive to revolutionary – and small business owners are too. We believe AI can be a foundational and transformational technology for small businesses, and we’re working – boldly and responsibly – to turn that belief into reality. Whether it’s managing their books, providing customer service, or their many responsibilities in between, many small business owners have adopted digital tools and AI to run and grow their businesses. In fact, 89% of small and medium business leaders said they use digital tools to find new customers, 88% to retain existing customers, 78% to work productively with employees, and 72% to hire new employees.2

At Google, we’ve been bringing AI into our products and services for over a decade and making them available to our users.

Google supports businesses every step of the way – whether they’re getting listed online for the first time with Google Business Profile or using AI models like Gemini in Google Ads to build campaigns – Google is proud to offer digital solutions for small business owners in communities across the U.S. The tools businesses use every day – from Gmail to Search to Ads – are helping businesses increase productivity, reach the right customers, and optimize limited budgets. In 2023, Google Search, Google Play, Google Cloud, YouTube, and Google advertising tools* helped provide $739 billion of economic activity for millions of American businesses, nonprofits, publishers, creators, and developers.

Businesses like Thread Logic in Minnesota, owned by Jeff and Wenda Taxdahl, use Google’s free tools to grow. In fact, their business has grown seven times since using Google Ads. And in just one year AI-powered Performance Max helped them increase customer acquisition by 73 percent. Thread Logic now ships hundreds of thousands of products to customers across the country each year. They’re a long way from their basement operation, but their commitment to quality and customer service hasn’t changed.

At Google, we’ve been bringing AI into our products and services for over a decade and making them available to our users. Features like Smart Reply in Gmail or finding fuel efficient routes in Google Maps have been using AI to help people like Jeff and Wenda in the moments that matter. With a bold and responsible approach, we’re taking the next steps to make this technology even more helpful for everyone.

With AI tools like Gemini, every business owner now has extra help, freeing up time to innovate and grow. Among small business leaders using AI, 82% say AI will improve their business productivity in the next two years.3 Now in minutes instead of hours, business owners can produce business insights with Analytics Intelligence or quickly generate responses to customer questions with Gemini for Workspace. The time and costs saved can be reinvested into themselves and their business.

In addition to supporting businesses with our products, we’re committed to helping Americans get the skills needed to land good jobs or advance in their careers, and helping business owners upskill employees. Over 250,000 Americans have graduated from the Google Career Certificate program with job-ready skills in cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management, and user experience design.

Among the certificate graduates is Scarlet Castillo Sanchez from Colorado, who had to relocate and find new work frequently due to her husband’s military job. Looking for a change, she enrolled in the Google Data Analytics Certificate. Within two months of earning her certificate, Scarlet landed a position as a quality data analyst at a communications company. This new role came with the flexibility to work from home, a 40 percent salary increase, and provided her and her husband the stability to start a family.

We’re proud that Google’s products are helping drive the success of American companies: supporting business growth, enabling businesses of all sizes to reach customers across the world, providing new platforms for independent creators to earn a living through, and increasing productivity for workers.

In this report, you’ll meet other businesses, creators, startups, and workers from across the U.S. that are using digital tools to grow their careers and businesses. We are committed to supporting them as they achieve their ambitions and helping every American benefit from the AI opportunity.

Artificial intelligence (AI) commitments

AI has the potential to help make our lives easier, reach big goals, and address some of our most complex and pressing social and economic challenges.

Economies that embrace AI may see significant growth, outcompeting rivals that are slower on the uptake.5 Whether it's making classrooms more accessible, keeping people safe with fire and flood forecasting, or improving our ability to detect and treat cancer and other diseases – AI can help us address some of the defining challenges of our time.

Adoption of AI tools in education can support teachers and help student achievement. Students using an AI-based literacy tool just once a week for a semester showed a 71% gain in their writing skills.6 And by using an AI model to identify students most at risk of dropping out and providing extra support, one college increased the graduation rate of its seniors from 54% to 86%.7

To harness AI’s promise, our approach must be both bold and responsible.

The only way to be truly bold in the long-term is to be responsible from the start. To us, that means supporting and developing AI in a way that maximizes the positive benefits to society while addressing the challenges, guided by our AI Principles.

Unlocking AI’s potential while safeguarding against its risks demands a collective effort. That’s why we’re partnering with others across industries, governments, civil society, education, and more. Together, we can tackle the difficult challenges and empower others to harness AI’s promise responsibly. We’re proud to join with other leading AI companies to jointly commit to advancing responsible practices in the development of AI. These commitments will support efforts by the G7, the OECD, and national governments to maximize AI’s benefits and minimize its risks.

Collaboration across governments and tech companies is essential in AI development. Nearly 80% of individuals agree that governments and tech companies should collaborate to oversee AI development.8

We’re working together to define American leadership in AI.

Governments, the private sector, educational institutions, and other stakeholders will need to implement joint and separate strategies to enable businesses, workers, and communities to capitalize on AI’s benefits. In 2023, we published The AI Opportunity Agenda, which offers a blueprint for investing in AI infrastructure, readying the workforce for the AI-enhanced jobs of tomorrow, and promoting widespread AI adoption. At the same time, we all must be clear-eyed that AI will come with risks and challenges.

To fully harness the possibilities of AI, we need a broader discussion about steps that governments, companies, and civil society can take to address these challenges and realize AI’s promise. We must focus not only on the harms we want to avoid and the risks we want to mitigate, but on the potential we want to achieve.

We are committed to working together with local and national leaders and experts to build smart, flexible, durable policy solutions that maximize AI’s world-changing potential while providing effective guardrails – unlocking opportunity, promoting responsibility, and ensuring security.
